As mentioned… I was without a vehicle for over a week. Part of that time included the day I normally do my weekly grocery shopping which meant I’d have to do the shopping in the hubs car. Yes, CAR.
It’s been a really long time (as in at least two decades) that I’d been grocery shopping in a car. I’ve gotten used to hauling stuff at an easy to load/unload height and I couldn’t imagine trying to wrestle a 50lb bag of dog food into the back seat. So…. in order to mitigate the damages and try to get everything I needed in one stop… so I went to ‘one stop’ Walmart.
As long as I was in there I decided to pay attention to what one could find locally for their preps. There was a lot actually.
In housewares there was a large display of canning jars and canning equipment.
In the paper goods section there were paper plates, straws (for the ill), plastic utensils, toilet paper… …
It wouldn’t take too much room to have a year’s supply of paper plates and utensils and relatively cheaply if you choose the lower priced variety.
The cereal aisle was full of options. Grains like oatmeal, grits, malt o’meal and cream of wheat are frugal buys as you get a lot of servings for your money AND they store well.
Granola bars for both your bug-out bag, your desk at work, your glove compartment and longer term food storage.
You can more MORE THAN JUST PANCAKES with pancake mix. And those big tubs of syrup will give the kids something sweet. You can serve it over biscuits or mixed with peanut butter.
Store back some Jello, both kinds. You can make gelatin to give the kids something sweet and you can make the instant pudding with your dehydrated milk powder.
LOTS of canned meats available these days. You’ll even find a bunch in easy open cans and travel packs. Don’t forget the boxed mac n’ cheese as you can make a meal of them (and mix them up into casseroles). They’re good for food storage especially if you vacuum seal. (Cardboard can get damp and deteriorate.)
As long as you’re at the store add some more rice and beans to your food storage. TRY a different bean this week.
Does your store have an ethnic section? The Spanish milk by Nestle is especially good AND it’s make from WHOLE MILK, not skim!!!!
Don’t overlook the section with the gallon sized containers. You’ll sometimes find giant containers of drink mix…and even some dehydrated food. This was in that section this week.
I like Augason’s products in general but haven’t ever purchased one of their emergency packs.
Do you have a favorite food to put back for your family? Anything that you just ‘have to have’ in your storage…. like chocolate? or coffee?
